Ofelia Bercaru – Director, Prioritisation and Integration, European Chemicals Agency (ECHA)

The use of HBM4EU results from different perspectives for the support of chemical policy and the protection of human health – 28 April – 4:00 pm CEST

 Ofelia Bercaru joined the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in 2009 where she is currently heading the Directorate for Prioritisation and Integration, overseeing the strategy for selecting substances for regulatory action under REACH, CLP and other legislation. She has more than 20 years of experience in research and regulation of chemicals, being involved in management roles as well as the set-up and development of chemical legislative processes.

Before joining ECHA, she has been working in different positions in the European Commission and national in the fields of environmental research and monitoring, risk assessment and the implementation of the Water Framework Directive

Ofelia holds a chemistry degree from the University of Bucharest and a PhD in chemistry from the Catholic University of Leuven.

The HBM4EU project was launched in 2016 with the aim of improving the collective understanding of human exposure to hazardous chemicals and developing HBM as an exposure assessment method. The project had €74m in funding and jointly implemented by 120 partners from 28 participating countries – 24 EU member states plus Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Israel and the European Environment Agency. One of its aims was to ensure the sustainability of HBM in the EU beyond 2021. The project ended in June 2022. The website will not be updated any longer, except the page on peer reviewed publications, but will be online until 2032.
