A status overview of the ethics approvals for the diisocyanates field studies is provided. Some challenges and contingencies in the recruitment phase are presented. Consequences of reduced response are presented using a power analysis. COVID19 infection of the study subject may have an impact on some of the measured parameters (inflammatory markers) . COVID19 vaccinations have started in different countries and are likely to continue until fall 2021. Also recent COVID19 vaccination may have an impact on these parameters.

The contents of the current SOP draw heavily from “SOP6: Standard operating procedure for air sampling of inhalable and respirable dust fraction and (hexavalent) chromium) developed for the HBM4EU occupational biomonitoring study on hexavalent chromium and other harmful chemicals (Porras et al., 2019). As such the contributors listed here as those that contributed to this original SOP.

The buccal micronucleus (BC-MN) assay is an effect biomarker for the detection of chromosomal damage in buccal epithelial tissue exfoliated cells, derived from the basal layer where cell division takes place and then they migrate towards the surface within few days.It implies a minimally invasive procedure to collect buccal cells; slides are easily prepared and stained for microscopic analysis, although the observation is time-consuming.

The purpose of the collection of hair samples in the e-waste study is to retrieve information on the level of exposure to metals and some organic compounds. Hair analysis offers a wider time window than blood or urine and segmentation will offer an indication of the time of exposure.

Many different approaches for estimating occup. exposure to chemical substances. Use of predictive exposure models becoming more frequent, e.g. not always possible to collect sufficient measurements to generate estimates for exposure scenarios. When applying exposure modelling tools, users required to select options from number of possible input parameters. Results obtained could be affected by factors such as professional experience / judgment of the user and access to appropriate level of information.

Workers are from companies performing e-waste management processes. Workers from both genders and ages ranging from 18-70 years will be considered. Control subjects should match for age, gender and smoking status from companies in the same geographical area but working on activities not related with e-waste management processes. Additional criteria should be followed for workers and controls in the case of biomarkers of effect (explained in SOP 2). SOP details the specific documents to be delivered to companies, workers and controls.
