Monitoring of chromium in different biological matrices has been used as a biomarker of Cr exposure. Total chromium in urine is not specific for hexavalent chromium since it measures exposure both to trivalent and hexavalent chromium. In contrast, chromium in Red Blood Cells is a specific biomarker of hexavalent chromium exposure given that only hexavalent chromium is able to cross the cell membrane. We present the different steps for the chromium determination in Red Blood Cells along with the main challenges related to this analysis.
