A large number of human samples will be analysed for specific biomarkers in HBM4EU. For up-to date and most correct budget estimations as well as help with the overall planning of the analytical work, a survey has been conducted to obtain tentative prices for biomarker analysis in HBM4EU. A questionnaire was sent to the laboratories that had signed up for the HBM4EU ICI/EQUAS. In addition to tentative price information for the biomarkers selected for the ICI/EQUAS, we enquired about time frames and additional biomarkers included in the analyses. For Cd and Cr, we did not ask about additional biomarkers, but about the analysis of more than one matrix.
A total of 166 requests were sent out and 118 responses with data were received. The average price for 300 samples ranged from 8,418 Euro (for Cr in urine) to 66,225 Euro (halogenated flame retardants in serum). The maximum prices were up to 2.4 times the average prices. DINCH was the only substance group of which all biomarkers (in this case, two) were analysed by all laboratories returning information. For other substance groups, only 12.5 (aromatic amines) to 89% (Cd) of the answers covered all biomarkers (or, in the case of Cd and Cr, all matrices). The absolute numbers range from 1-17 laboratories analysing the full list of biomarkers (or all matrices for Cd and Cr). Consequently, the costs for the analysis of complete lists of biomarkers might be higher than reported here.
The time frames for the analysis of 300 samples differ widely, even within one substance group. The median time frames are roughly 2-3 months for the analysis of 300 samples, but > 3 months for the halogenated and phosphorous flame retardants. Many laboratories remarked that the time frame needed information and planning well in advance. Data on the aromatic amines are considered preliminary as the ICI/EQUAS preparations had not advanced as far as for the other substance groups.
