Human biomonitoring (HBM) is a powerful tool that can support human risk assessment of chemicals. Being an integrative tool as such, it integrates exposure via all sources, routes and regulatory silo’s. It can help to identify subpopulations with generally high exposure to multiple chemicals and it can increase the power of epidemiology in chemicals risk and safety assessment and as such reduce the dependency on animal toxicity studies. In order to empower HBM to its full extent, there is a need for EU wide guidance on how to perform HBM and use HBM results, for many more HBM Guidance Values, more human toxicokinetic information of substances and toxicokinetic modelling as well as data storage systems for HBM Guidance Values such as Internal DNELs.
